This was fascinating.

Awesome — however I must point out that this is a leopard seal, we’re talking Antarctic here. I guess the penguins make that obvious.

My friend Jessie is one of the few humans who’ve ever been attacked by a leopard seal. She was standing by a hole cut in the ice for diver access (this is around 1990 in the Ross Sea btw) when a leopard erupted from the hole and grabbed her knee. She’s not a tall woman and was fully bundled up for the cold, so it’s likely what happened here is a failure of perspective — familiar profile but way too big, but the seal couldn’t tell that from underneath. When the seal realized it hadn’t grabbed an emperor penguin it immediately let go and took off. She had trouble walking for a while but it was mostly bruises. Layers of clothing saved her from worse trouble. Made the NZ papers. Bitchin’ story.
